Part 5 – Why Miracles?
Luke 5:1-11

INTRODUCTION
A miracle is an extraordinary work of God, going beyond the ordinary powers of nature, for which God has a distinct purpose in mind.
Luke 5:1-4 One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret, with the people crowding around Him and listening to the word of God, 2 He saw at the water’s edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets. 3 He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then He sat down and taught the people from the boat. 4 When He had finished speaking, He said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.” (NIV)
1. THIS STORY RELATES AN AMAZING MIRACLE Jesus PERFORMED.
A. You know that in Jesus movies, for some reason, they change a few of the facts and that happens in the video I want to show you but it ends well. So, watch this.
2. WHAT ARE GOD’S PURPOSES FOR PERFORMING MIRACLES?
Notice three results of this miracle in Peter’s life:
A. It focused Peter’s attention upon Jesus, not the fish.
Luke 5:8 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!”
1. The miracle had allowed Peter to see who Jesus actually is.
2. When he saw Jesus, suddenly he saw his own sinfulness.
B. The miracle focused Peter’s heart from fishing for himself to fishing for God.
Luke 5:10 Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will catch men.” (NIV)
C. The miracle’s purpose was to cause Peter to forsake everything else in order to follow Christ.
Luke 5:11 So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed Him. (NIV)
