Part 2 | When Doing Right Turns Out Wrong

Genesis 39 | April 19, 2026

Dr. Mark S. Hartman, Lead Pastor – SCBC

1. GOD IS WITH US, REGARDLESS OF OUR CIRCUMSTANCES.  (Genesis 39:1-6)

  • Genesis 39:1-6 Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt.  Potiphar, an Egyptian who was one of Pharaoh's officials, the captain of the guard, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had taken him there.  2 The LORD was with Joseph and he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master.  3 When his master saw that the LORD was with him and that the LORD gave him success in everything, he did,  4 Joseph found favor in his eyes and became his attendant. Potiphar put him in charge of his household, and he entrusted to his care everything he owned.  5 From the time he put him in charge of his household and of all that he owned, the LORD blessed the household of the Egyptian because of Joseph. The blessing of the LORD was on everything Potiphar had, both in the house and in the field.  6 So he left in Joseph's care everything he had; with Joseph in charge, he did not concern himself with anything except the food he ate. (NIV)

2. CHALLENGES WILL REVEAL OUR CHARACTER.  (Genesis 39:6-18)

  • A. Genesis 39:6-7 So Potiphar left in Joseph's care everything he had; with Joseph in charge, he did not concern himself with anything except the food he ate.  Now Joseph was well-built and handsome, (NIV)
  • B. Genesis 39:8-9 But he refused. “With me in charge,” he told her, “my master does not concern himself with anything in the house; everything he owns he has entrusted to my care.  9 No one is greater in this house than I am. My master has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?”
  • 1 Corinthians 6:18-20 Run from sexual sin!  19 Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, 20 for God bought you with a high price. So, you must honor God with your body.
  • C. Genesis 39:10–12 And though she spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused…to even be with her.  11 One day he went into the house to attend to his duties, and none of the household servants was inside.  12 She caught him by his cloak… but he left his cloak in her hand and ran out of the house.
  • D. Romans 13:14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts. (NKJV)

If you give in to what you know is wrong; what you know is immoral – you might hide it for a while, but you will be eventually found out.  The pain and the consequences will be far greater than any pleasure.

  • E. Genesis 39:16-18 She kept his cloak beside her until Potipher came home. 17 Then she told him this story: “That Hebrew slave you brought us came to me to make sport of me.  18 But as soon as I screamed for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house.” (NIV)

3. WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN RIGHT TURNS OUT WRONG?

  • A. Isaiah 50:10  Who is among you that fears the LORD, That obeys the voice of His servant, That walks in darkness and has no light? Let him trust in the Name of the LORD and rely on his God. (NASB)
  1. Job 19:8 God has set darkness at my paths.
  2. 2 Corinthians 4:8  We are perplexed, but not in despair…
  • B. What should we do in our times of darkness?  (Isaiah 50:10)
  1. Trust in Who God is.
  2. Trust in what God has promised you.

God has said He will turn the unfair times in our life that Satan brings against us for our advantage.  (Romans 8:28)
