Part 1 | The Bread of Life

John 6 | May 10, 2026 (Mother’s Day)

Dr. Mark S. Hartman, Lead Pastor – SCBC

1. THE GREAT “I AM.”

  • A. Exodus 3:13-14 Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?” 14  God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: I AM has sent me to you.”
  • B. The word that is translated I AM is a form of the Hebrew word Yahweh.  The English word for Yahweh is Jehovah.  It is derived from the Hebrew verb “havah”which means “I WAS, I AM, I WILL BE”.
  • C. When Jesus made His “I AM” statements during His ministry such as, “I Am the Bread of Life, I Am the Good Shepherd, I Am the Door, I Am the Light, I Am the Resurrection, I Am the Alpha and Omega,” he is actually saying, “I Am Yahweh God.”

2. JESUS DIDN’T COME TO GIVE US BREAD.

  • A. John 6:14-15  When the people saw the sign He had done, they said, “This truly is the Prophet who is to come into the world.” 15 Therefore, when Jesus realized that they were about to come and take Him by force to make Him king, He withdrew again to the mountain by Himself.
  • B. John 6:25-27 When they found Him on the other side of the sea, they said to Him, “Teacher, when did you get here?” 26 Jesus answered, “Truly I tell you, you are looking for Me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate the loaves and were filled.”

The Bible does not teach that God is a vending machine.

  • C. Jesus didn’t come to give us everything we want. He came to be everything we need.
  • D. John 6:35 Then Jesus declared, “I AM the Bread of Life. Whoever comes to Me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in Me will never be thirsty.
  • E. John 6:51  I AM the Living Bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever.
  • F. John 6:68-69 And Peter said, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. 69 We have come to believe and know that You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God.”

3. JESUS CAME TO BE BREAD – THE SOURCE OF OUR LIFE.

  • A. Jesus came to have a relationship with you.  He came to love you and be loved by you.  He came to be your source of life and strength.  He came to live inside you and be the source of power you have longed to have
  • B. John 6:29 Jesus replied, “This is the work of God - that you believe in the One He has sent.”
