ABUNDANT LIFE IS NOT FOUND IN THE STRENGTH OF THE SHEEP, BUT IN THE GOODNESS OF THE SHEPHERD.
1. THE GOOD SHEPHERD PROTECTS HIS SHEEP FROM DANGER.
- John 10:11-13 - I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 12 He who is a hired hand and not a shepherd, who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. 13 He flees because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep.
A. Jesus gave up His safety for our protection.
2 Thess. 3:3 - But the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and guard you against the evil one.
2. THE GOOD SHEPHERD KNOWS AND CARES FOR HIS SHEEP PERSONALLY.
- John 10:14-15 - I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep.
A. Jesus gave up His comfort for our flourishing.
- Psalm 23: 1-4 - The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. 3 He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake. 4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
3. THE GOOD SHEPHERD LEADS ALL HIS SHEEP INTO HIS FLOCK.
- John 10:16 - And I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd.

- Isaiah 53:6 - All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
A. Jesus gave up His majesty for our belonging.
- Philippians 2: 5-8 – Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
4. THE GOOD SHEPHERD GIVES HIS LIFE FOR HIS SHEEP.
- John 10:17-18- For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life that I may take it up again. 18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father.”
A. Jesus gave His perfect life for our abundant life.
- 2 Corinthians 5:21 - For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
B. Because Jesus gave His life for us, we can trust Him and follow Him as our Shepherd.
- John 10:27-28 - My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.
